If things are getting too toasty or chilly in your house, your HVAC system may be old, worn out, and in dire need of a replacement. You can’t just snap your fingers and make a new HVAC system appear, though. You need to schedule a professional HVAC installation to ensure the long-lasting, reliable, and consistent temperature control you’re looking for.
However, HVAC installations are involved processes, so it’s important that you understand what will happen at each step of the way so you can prepare accordingly.
Pre-Installation
There’s some essential groundwork to cover before techs can install HVAC systems. First and foremost is choosing an HVAC system. If a unit is too small, it likely won’t be able to adequately heat or cool your space’s square footage. On the other hand, if it is too large, it will probably do so too quickly and eat up your electricity as well.
Even with the right system in mind, there are still some tasks you need to take care of before the HVAC installation can start, such as:
- Storing breakable or delicate items
- Covering your furniture
- Laying down drop cloths to protect floors
- Landscaping around the location of the outdoor unit
- Planning for a day without heat or air conditioning
These steps let your installation techs work easier and faster without obstacles or the worry they’ll damage anything. If you have pets or children, keep them out of the house as well.
Preparation
Once you’ve prepared your home, the techs may have some preliminary work to do, such as:
- Removing the old HVAC system and recovering refrigerant
- Taking measurements to ensure proper fitment
- Checking if current ducts need repair or replacement
- Determining where new ductwork will be installed
If you and the technicians providing HVAC services haven’t yet found a location for the new unit, now is the time to do so. You may need to have a concrete slab poured if there isn’t one already.
Installation
Putting in the new HVAC unit should take one day, though more complicated installs may stretch over a couple of days. First, the techs will secure the new AC unit to the outside location. From there, the refrigerant and drain lines will be cut to length and attached to the unit, and the techs will wire the unit to your circuit breaker. They may also hook up a new thermostat.
After the unit is in place and ready to go, the techs will connect the new HVAC unit to the ductwork. Depending on the location and condition of your home’s existing ducts, doing so may involve some invasive construction in the home. Ducts need to be hidden, so there may need to be drywall or stud removal and replacement, electrical upgrades, and repairs to damaged or rotten areas.
If any of these are the case, you can expect the job to take longer and cost more, but it will be necessary to ensure the outcome is seamless.
Post-Installation
After the crew is done, they’ll add refrigerant to the system, inspect the installation to make sure there are no issues, and then test the unit to see that it’s working properly. Finally, your installer will go over maintenance procedures and how to use the system.
